About this game
Ancient Origins, Modern Play
Backgammon is one of the oldest known board games, with roots stretching back thousands of years. This digital version brings that timeless contest to your screen, preserving the blend of strategic planning and chance that has entertained players across centuries. The goal remains simple: move all your pieces into your home board and remove them before your opponent does. White pieces exit at the lower right, black at the top right. This free online edition lets you play against a computer opponent on a standard board, offering a balanced experience that respects the game's heritage.
Rolling the Dice
Each turn begins by rolling two six-sided dice using the on-screen button. The numbers rolled determine your possible moves. You can move one piece the total of both dice, or move two pieces separately. The objective is to advance all your pieces into your home board and then bear them off. You can also hit your opponent's lone pieces, sending them to the bar and forcing them to re-enter from the start. The first player to bear off all their pieces wins. Full rules are always available for reference, so you can start playing immediately without prior knowledge.
Two Skill Levels
The game offers two difficulty settings: easy for beginners learning the basics, and hard for more experienced players seeking a greater challenge. This allows you to progress at your own pace, starting with easier matches to understand the flow, then moving to harder games to refine your strategy. The computer opponent adapts to your skill level, providing a consistent test without being overwhelming.
Clean and Accessible Design
The interface is designed to be simple and clear, suitable for all ages. No registration is required, and no downloads or installations are needed. You play against the computer at your own pace, making it easy to fit a quick game into a short break. The visual layout focuses on the board and pieces, minimizing distractions so you can concentrate on the game.
Building Your Strategy
Success in Backgammon comes from balancing offense and defense. Focus on building points to block your opponent's pieces, creating obstacles that slow their progress. At the same time, look for opportunities to hit your opponent's lone pieces, sending them back to the start. Manage your home board carefully to bear off efficiently when the time comes. Practice both aggressive and cautious approaches to adapt to different dice rolls. Use the two difficulty levels to hone your skills: start with easy to learn the basics, then move to hard for a greater challenge. Review the full rules whenever you need clarification.
